Reimagining the Triadic Relationship: Humans, God, and Nature in Contemporary Muslim Literature

Abstract

This article examines how contemporary Muslim literature reimagines the triadic relationship between God, humans, and the natural world in response to the modern ecological crisis. By analyzing a wide array of literary works, including novels, eco-poetry, digital art, and localized oral traditions, we explore how writers transform classical theological principles such as stewardship (khalifah), cosmic balance (mizan), spiritual excellence (ihsan), and divine trust (amanah) into a living narrative force. The study employs a qualitative-thematic approach combined with literary ecocriticism and textual hermeneutics to map these eco-theological expressions across diverse cultural and postcolonial contexts. Beyond mere textual analysis, the article bridges spiritual metaphysics with physical action, examining faith-based institutional models like Indonesian eco-pesantrens and green financial instruments like Islamic green bonds. Finally, we address the persistent gap between theoretical theology and actual environmental practice, highlighting urgent calls for policy integration and fossil fuel divestment. Ultimately, this research argues that contemporary literature serves as a crucial imaginative space to resacralize the earth, encouraging a shift from exploitative habits to a deeply felt, holistic model of environmental accountability.
